You can gain defence exp accidentally if you're not careful because when you use the G2H the best way is to have it on smash mode because it has the best bonuses and using it on slash would just be like having a rune 2h , and ofcourse if you switch back to a bow or scim it automatically goes on defence mode. As for levelling it, it's a bit tedious to start off with but when you get into the 70's it gets alot faster or if you do it with friends. And yes, it's the same amount of exp till 99. Hope i cleared everything up ;P :thumbsup:
