Skillcapes. Skillcapes caused the biggest problem in RuneScape, with a snowball effect on everything else in the game.

 

Prior to skillcapes people did whatever the **** they wanted, but as soon as skillcapes came in people began the senseless grind to be 'better' than others.

 

After skillcapes, many skillers simply didn't visit the wilderness at all. It wasn't the best xp/hr to get their skillcapes, so why should they? PKers in lower levels stopped PKing, they needed strength skillcapes to compete.

 

Skillcapes came in October 2006, botting and RWTing exploded in January 2007. It is not a coincidence. People needed gold... to fund their skillcapes. People wanted to spend money they had bought without effort, so they turned to scripts and macros. The scripting & botting community grew enormously after 2007 because people "needed" these 99s. Scripts came out for all skills, and voila, macro heaven.

 

Yes macroing was around prior to skillcapes, but there was not anywhere near as many bots prior to skillcapes. Nobody wanted to spend all day cooking lobsters or sharks which is why PCR food was cheaper than cooked. You actually made cash doing these boring repetitive tasks. Nobody wanted to burn thousands of logs, which is why the general stores were filled with them.
