I have a question

 

im doing solving absolute value equations

 

they gave me a wrong answer to a question and want me to find the mistake

 

|x-6|=-2

 

x-6=-2 or x-6=2

 

x=4 or x=8

 

Where is the mistake there?

|x-6| = -2

 

(x+6) = -2 or -(x+6) = -2

 

x = -8 or x = -4

 

^That should be correct.

 

What was wrong with the problem is that the absolute power was put in place on the -2 instead of the x-6. Had the original equation been x-6 = |-2| then the answers you were given would have been correct.
